Karrie asked the email list what the difference between Campus Point and Poles was and got a few responses: Kristen said: Susan and I (Special K, the person, not the substance) had a discussion about this on the phone today. To me, Campus Point and Poles are pretty much the same thing - but to connoisseurs such as Susan (you don't even want to know how long it just took me to figure out how to spell that) anyway, to Campus Point connoisseurs, there is a difference. Basically, Campus Point is that pointy part and Poles is the part about 30 yards over that is kind of in front of the parking lot area (the bluffs area). It's hard for me to consider them two different places deserving two different names considering it takes about 5 minutes to paddle between the two, but it should be noted that all SB Surf Grl group injuries so far have taken place at Campus Point, not Poles, so I guess maybe there is a difference. Oh, PS, speaking of names, did you know that the place over by Refugio (not the pointy area) is called Beavers? Who comes up with this stuff, anyway??? Susan responded: I call them two different things because the surf is so different even though they're so close together - one's a reef/point breeak and the other is a total sand break. In either case, I did not go last night :( But, I did notice that today the graph shows up to 5 feet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! To which Kristen acquiesced: Oh yeah, point break and beach break, I forgot about that :) Okay, I guess they are pretty different. 5 feet? I am gonna have to go down there and take a look. Oh, there is a web cam for Campus Point on the UCSB bookstore and I put a link to it on the beaches page of Campus Point at SbSurfgrls.com little foggy right now, so I can't see much. -Kristen And to that, Susan replied: Yeah, hahahaha - I learned that from YOU! That webcam is so awesome!!!!! Thanks!!!! Katie ended the discussion with: Hey all, Thanks for the distinction between the two places :) So there you have it - Campus Point and Poles are very close together, but two very different animals :) If you would like to submit an article, please email it to surf@sbsurfgrls.com. Thanks! |
