Here's something I didn't know that I thought might help my Girls rip curls.
A Clean Board - Unless you're starting with a new board, you'll need a scraper (or credit card) and the sun to clean off all the old wax. Let it sit in the sun for a while and then scrape it all off. Then, move to the shade to begin waxing it. Preferably a flat surface not in the sand.
Base Wax - when you first get your board, you need a thick layer of base wax the entire length of your longboard (because eventually you'll be walking up and down it to regulate speed). You need a heavy coat all along the center line as a result. And, you'll also need a heavy coat above the fins because that's where you'll plant your foot to pivot your board (enabling you to turn). The blue Mr. Zogg's Sex Wax works well as a base wax because it's coded "tropical" meaning it is a harder wax and will melt at a higher temperature. If you have a 9' board, you'll use nearly half a new round of wax in total. Put in on the way you put on car wax-- in small even circles, creating bumps as you do so.
Surface Wax - after you're finished using half a found of blue sex wax, switch to the green (softer) wax as a surface wax. Apply it in the same manner as the base wax-- in small circles, making your base bumps even bumpier. Again, you'll end up using nearly half a new round with a 9' longboard.
Maintain - in order to maintain your wax job, you'll need to keep it out of the hot sun both on your car and at the beach. If you don't have shade, at least cover your board with a couple towels.
Booties - and it goes without saying, of course that you get traction from booties so waxing is more important as you go bootie-less.
Bump Job - If you want to see a good bump job, check out Ventura Vixen's board. Her bumps are bumpilicious. Not sure how she's getting those perfect bumps but I think it has something to do with her singing Madonna songs to her Ipod while riding her bike before and after surfing.
