Surf Wear

It's that time of year again. The surf gets smaller. The crowd gets bigger. The air gets warmer. Time to put the full suit in the closet.

Okay, now what?

I've got a spring suit that I can wear, but boy, those tan lines are funky. That leaves me with a reluctant choice. . .duh duh duh (insert dramatic music here). . .the swimsuit. Aw man, really? I've gotten so used to getting sucked into yards of restrictive neoprene that I'm reluctant to open up to the elements. It's a realization that leads me to wonder, "Why didn't I use those Winsor Pilates tapes like I thought I would?" I'm no spring chicken anymore. Things that look okay standing still are not so hot in motion these days.

This morning I made a giant mistake. I went to a bathing suit store looking to find my summer gear. I say gear because that's what I want. I don't want to maximize my tan. I don't want to show off my various body parts. I want to surf and play comfortably. I don't want to feel naked, but I don't want to wear a bathing suit with a skirt either. It's a market that I find ill-addressed: 30 something women and up, having had birthed child/children, still wanting to look cute and fun, not ready to throw in the towel, but wanting to cover parts that deserve a little privacy after years of hard work. Needless to say, I left empty handed.

This is my first summer season surfing, and I'm still figuring many things out: how to stay ahead of the whitewater, how to cross step, how to not look like a total idiot. Now, I guess I'll have to figure out what to wear out there. I wonder if that skirt would get in the way of my pop up. . .
